If you are adapting one the earlier stories ever recorded by man, you must make the scope as epic as the story. Go big or go home. From the looks of this trailer, director Ridley Scott gets it. Scott is extraordinarily ambitious nowadays with a (bucket) list of movies he plans to shoot in the coming years, including sequels to Prometheus and Blade Runner. However, before he can get to those small films, he decided to make a feature of the biblical story of Moses and Ramses.
Exodus: Gods and Kings is the latest reimagining of the Old Testament story about the prophet Moses, leading the Hebrews to freedom in Egypt. Ridley went to the A-list and hired Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), no stranger to taking on iconic roles, to play Moses. Joel Edgerton (The Warrior) was brought aboard to portray Moses’ brother, the Egyptian ruler Ramses. It will be interesting to see if the casting of these actors will stir controversy, since the leads are surely ethnically inaccurate. Ridley also filled out the supporting cast with quality talent including, Sigourney Weaver (Avatar, Alien), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) and John Turturro (The Big Lebowski). It is clear this will be the most action-packed and battle-ready Moses that we have ever seen on-screen. Aside from that stylistic choice, the scenes of the plagues and skirmishes, are epic in scope and style. Plus there might not be a better choice of actors to portray someone maddened with conviction. Plus Bale says the word “god” with some serious understated swag. How can you not appreciate that?
