Okay…so the crowded summer movie season of 2017, just got a whole lot more interesting as one of the most celebrated modern directors is coming back sooner than expected. Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar), the master of making thinking man’s epics, is apparently returning with another film for the summertime.
It has yet to be revealed what the premise of his upcoming film is, which is actually par for the course in regards to Nolan’s filmmaking process. Even his smaller films, such as Memento or The Prestige, have ideas which are huge, so it is impossible to know the nature of his movie until he reveals it. He isn’t like most directors who circle projects for years publicly before jumping on board. Typically, Nolan works on his scripts in private before giving only the vaguest of plot descriptions, so this is actually par for the course.
According to Variety, Warner Bros has planted their flag on June 21st, 2017, for Nolan’s new untitled project. However, this is the first official announcement for the film, so expect more info to funnel in shortly. Clearly, the studio has confidence in Nolan and his latest venture. So much so, that they are opening only a week before the new reboot of Sony’s Spider-Man series, while opening opposite Pitch Perfect 3. WB must feel that the movie will be strong counter-programming to the female dominated audience of the Pitch Perfect franchise, while perhaps being mature and layered enough to bring in repeat viewers, despite the looming juggernaut of Sony/Marvel Spider-Man. Regardless, it is a tricky proposition and makes it seem as if this will be a smaller project with lower expectations than usual for Nolan.
There are some that will employ positive thinking and hope that this means that Nolan could be working on a new DC Comics property. However, WB has already shown a reluctance to challenge Marvel themed films in such a tight window. Not to mention, Nolan has already expressed that he has satisfied all of his creative yearnings in the genre. So it is pretty safe to assume that this is not a DCEU film. No sense in speculating too much more on this one, since who the heck knows what the Nolan has planned. However, it is always a good thing when one of the best in the business throws his hat in the ring.
Christopher Nolan’s next untitled film is set for release on June 21st, 2017.
