The spy genre in film is a category of movie that will likely never go away. The genre is able to contemporize itself for every generation, while constantly adding new wrinkles and layers that challenge the audience’s expectations. In the 1960’s James Bond branded the genre, while consistently reinventing itself with new leads over the years. On television there was Mission Impossible, which was reinvented for the big screen in the 1990’s by Tom Cruise, who is currently filming the fifth installment of the series. In the 2000’s, the modern interpretation the spy film was redefined once again, as Matt Damon brought the amnesiac killing machine Jason Bourne to popular culture. Well the newest spy movie is right around the corner and it looks to add some class to the genre.
Director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) thought that it was about time for a fresh redefinition of what a spy movie looks like. He has adapted the story for the big-screen from the comic book, The Secret Service, written by Mark Millar. The film stars Colin Firth in a role unlike any he has portrayed before, as a veteran secret agent who has taken a new trainee under his wing.
The cast is exceptional as Michael Caine and Mark Strong play other operatives in the spy organization. Samuel L. Jackson plays the main villain as he does his best Russell Simmons impression, complete with a tilted hat and awful lisp. Hopefully Simmons isn’t a super-villain in real life and doesn’t hunt down Jackson for revenge. Also joining the fun is Mark Hamill, who is in the midst of a career resurgence due to his central role in the upcoming, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Hamill actually appears in the original comic book as himself, however in the film adaptation it seems that they have given him a new role.
All of Vaughn’s action films have included humor and this film looks to be no exception. He turned down the opportunity to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past to direct this spy tale, so this movie should have even more to it than is being revealed.
