One of the biggest surprise hits of 2015 was the satirical spy movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The movie took the traditional tropes of 1960’s James Bond films and reformatted them for a modern audience. It proved to be both a success with audiences and critics, while also showing (a year before the release of Deadpool) how profitable a quality release in February could be.
The movie was based on the comic created by acclaimed writer Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Screenwriter Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass) and Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) adapted the comic into a feature, with Vaughn providing his signature style behind the camera. He hired an eclectic cast including the discovery of Taron Egerton (Eddie the Eagle), Samuel L. Jackson (The Hateful Eight), Mark Hamill (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond), and the biggest surprise and standout, Colin Firth.
Firth has built a career on proper dramas, with his most recent success being his Academy Award winning turn in The King’s Speech. His refined background made Firth the least likely action star in Hollywood. However, his scene stealing performance became instantaneously iconic once Kingsman hit theaters last year. So much so, that audiences couldn’t process the character getting killed with an unceremonious shot to the head in the film. So, it was a shock when it was revealed that Firth would be returning for the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
In a recent interview with Collider, he explains more.
It’s no secret that I’m involved, somewhere and somehow. From what I’ve been able to gather, It’s going to be something that feels very much its own thing. I’m very optimistic about it…
I can’t give too much away about in what capacity I’m back. A lot of people have speculated and a lot of people have come to the wrong conclusions about it. I want to keep the surprise alive, a little longer. I think they’re going to be surprised again.
So, it’s clear that the mechanism that will bring the actor back is a big part of the plot, or there wouldn’t be so much secrecy surrounding it. Firth was killed on camera, so they must have a creative method of his return. Hopefully, it doesn’t involve long-lost twins or fancy mirrors. However, Kingsman does take place in a world of science fiction, so the possibilities are endless.
The sequel has added Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, and Channing Tatum, to the cast, so there surely won’t be a talent gap. Vaughn hasn’t had a huge misfire so far and while he isn’t known for directing sequels to his own movies, hopefully The Golden Circle is as fresh as Firth has alluded to. The movie has a summer release, so hopefully we will get a teaser trailer by the end of the year.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens on June 16th, 2017.
