DEADPOOL Director and Screenwriter Talk About Casting Cable for DEADPOOL 2

This is the year of the comic book movie and the record-breaking success began in February with Fox’s release of Deadpool. The movie has grossed over $700 million dollars worldwide and is prepping for a home video release.

The other huge priority for the Deadpool franchise is the development of its sequel, which director Tim Miller and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are hard at work on.

The one addition to the movie that has been confirmed is that the popular Marvel Comics character Cable will be making his live-action debut. This is what Miller had to say about their casting search for an actor to bring the part to life.

“There’s a lot about Cable’s history that I like because he’s so intertwined with the world of the X-Men. Why he was put together with Deadpool – other than that he was in a comic that wasn’t selling well and Deadpool was in a comic that wasn’t selling well so they put them together – it’s the same reason we had Colossus; he’s a straight man. And I think Deadpool needs a straight man. Cable is the ultimate, archetypal, silent, strong and cynical warrior, which Deadpool is not.”

The addition of Cable will help to focus the narrative of the film and also to serve as a link to bring Deadpool into the larger X-Men universe. The duo has the opportunity to be a comedic team in the Laurel and Hardy mold, that hasn’t been explored in superhero movies yet. Reese had this to add to the description:

“Strength, gravitas, a purposefulness that Deadpool doesn’t have. Deadpool’s kind of got ADD, and we think of Cable as someone who locks onto something and is going to get that thing solved no matter what.”

The role of Cable is one of the most iconic characters still waiting for cinematic glory. He is a time-travelling warrior on a mission to save the future. Cable could be the Terminator of the X-Men universe if handled correctly, so the casting is certainly being handled with scrutiny and care. There should be news on the horizon regarding this and other castings coming soon.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 25th, 2016.
