Director Peyton Reed Hints At the Changes Coming in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

Though there were many fanboys who couldn’t wait to see Edgar Wright’s version of Marvel’s Ant-Man, it unfortunately never came together. Marvel hired director Peyton Reed to come in at the last minute to save the day and he managed to deliver an entertaining and creative superhero movie. Marvel has taken a different approach to each of their films, with different corresponding genre templates. Captain America: The Winter Soldier being a political thriller and Guardians of the Galaxy being a space opera (and basically Star Wars) for example. Ant-Man was presented as a heist film and Reed assures us that they will be taking on a new genre template for the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Reed confirmed as much during an interview with Comic Book Resources.

“I think there’s probably going to be some aspects that maybe call back to the tone of this movie, but for ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ we have an entirely different template. We know what that template is, and we have an entirely different genre template for that movie. But it’s going to remain a surprise. But yes, that’s already been decided.”

While the sub-genre of Ant-Man was essentially a heist film, the movie’s star Paul Rudd and comedy director Adam McKay, did a rewrite of the script specifically punching up the comedic aspect. For the sequel, McKay will be returning “in some capacity,” according to Reed. He went on to mention his excitement for giving Evangeline Lily’s Wasp a much bigger role – the co-lead – in Ant-Man and the Wasp. This is not only the first time a female character has had her name in the title of a MCU film, but this movie is essentially a partnership, offering a different dynamic than what we’re used to with Marvel films. Sure, Sam Wilson/Falcon is Cap’s partner, but it is always Captain America’s movie with the story heavily centered on him. The relationship between Hope van Dyne and Scott Lang is something Reed can’t wait to dig into.

There has been some talk floating around that Scott Lang could turn into Giant-Man during his appearance in Civil War next year. Reed agrees that Giant-Man and Goliath are key parts of the characters history in the comics and “to ignore that would be crazy.” Hank Pym in the film says the suit “took a toll” on him, and during this interview, Reed seems to possibly suggest that maybe Pym went giant-sized back in the day.

“Scott says to him, ‘Why don’t you just put on the suit?’ He’s like, ‘I can’t. I did it for a long time, and it took a toll on me.’ It’s like. Well, what does that mean, exactly? I think there are a lot of things that we’re going to explore in the next one that will explain a lot of that stuff.”

Those aren’t the only relationships that will be explored in the film. Everyone involved wants Michael Douglas to return as Hank Pym and according to Reed, he most definitely will. The family dynamic between fathers and daughters – Hank with Hope and Scott with his daughter Cassie – will continue to be explored in the sequel. Although, there is one person being left out of this Ant-Man family conversation…and that’s Janet. While the original Wasp was mentioned in the film and basically said to have completely disappeared with no chance of ever coming back, there seems to be a glimmer of hope. Thanks to the Micro-Verse, which is an entire microscopic universe that exists in Marvel lore. It’s too early for Reed to give any concrete details regarding Janet, but the opportunity to explore the character seems to excite him and us as well.
