Even before Deadpool hit theaters, its marketing campaign was among the best in recent memory. The movie itself was of course incredible, but watching Ryan Reynolds in that Deadpool costume for three months, advertising his own movie, was sheer genius. Something else that is a genius idea is Deadpool hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live. No, not Ryan Reynolds, but the character of Deadpool himself – that’s what thousands of fans are trying to get accomplished.
A petition on Change.org is calling for SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels and Ryan Reynolds to make this a reality. So far, the petition has 40,000+ signatures, with a goal of 50,000 and by the time you’re reading this, it will probably have already reached its goal. Andrew Stege started the petition four weeks ago and has gotten plenty of people to help spread the word all throughout social media.
“How would this not be hilarious having Deadpool in sketches, breaking the 4th wall, and inserting some of his brand of humor (obviously toned down a bit for network television)!?!?! I have not watched a full episode of SNL in years because I just haven’t been able to stomach an entire episode, but having Deadpool host, star, and be all over the episode would get the DVR set so I can watch it again and again!!! Not to mention, depending on the musical guest, how awesome would it be to have some Deadpool interpretive dancing while the musical guest was playing? There’s unlimited possibilities!!!”
Deadpool has a very dirty and raunchy sense of humor, he’s violent and hyper-active, not to mention completely meta and self-aware. The material that could be executed on SNL with Deadpool hosting could be a goldmine. Reynolds himself has already hosted the show, making superhero jokes in his opening monologue. But to see him wear that red and black costume throughout the duration of the entire show would make for one great night of comedy. Not to mention, it completely makes sense for something like this to happen, given the sudden popularity of the character and his self-referential nature. If Deadpool 2 were to have a 2018 release, it would be extremely wise to get the Merc with a Mouth hosting Saturday Night Live, either the weekend before or the weekend of the sequel’s opening. Talk about brilliant marketing strategies.
Ryan Reynolds could get some of his Deadpool co-stars to appear as well, like Morena Baccarin or T.J. Miller. Just imagine a sketch with Deadpool and the actor cast to play Cable together, giving audiences a taste of what they might see in the film. There are, indeed, a plethora of possibilities with an idea like this. Let’s see what happens…
