In January of this year, Joe Russo, the co-director of Captain America: Civil War made headlines when talked about the potential scope of Avengers: Infinity War. He off-handedly mentioned that there was a board within Marvel Studios with 67 eligible characters that could potentially appear in mega-event film. The quote sent the internet and imaginations ablaze. As some marveled at the scope and ambition, while others lamented that it seemed like an overstuffed and misguided direction for the film.
Since that time, the statement has been clarified as hyperbole. However, it seems that every week a new character is confirmed to appear in the upcoming superhero film. It is a safe assumption that characters like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers (albeit without the Captain America moniker), will appear in the next Avengers film, as well as new additions such as Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Ant-Man, and even hints at the Illuminati have been confirmed as well.
The pool of candidates to show up in Infinity War is gaudy and when you consider other characters on the TV side, including The Defenders and the Punisher, it’s understandable to expect that everyone will not appear. However, today at the press junket for Doctor Strange, ScreenRant spoke with actor Benedict Wong (The Martian), who plays Wong in the film. When asked about the possibility of him showing up in the next Avengers battle, he shared some info.
Wong joins the Avengers at some point in the comic books as well.
Benedict Wong: Yes, so we’ll, uh, we’ll see him in Infinity War. I’ll be…
Are you saying Wong could be in Infinity War?Benedict Wong: He is. I’m saying he is! I hope that’s… Yeah, it is true.
This news should not be a huge surprise to comic book fans familiar with “Infinity Gauntlet” saga. Doctor Strange and Wong are the first Earthlings to find out about the pending doom coming to Earth, when the Silver Surfer comes crashing into the Sanctum Sanctorum warning them of Thanos.
The past representation of Wong as Strange’s manservant has been addressed and seemingly corrected, both in contemporary comics and most notably in the upcoming movie, Doctor Strange. Wong no longer is strictly in service of the Sorcerer Supreme, but serves as a master trainer and keeper of secrets of the Mystic Arts. So, it would make sense for him to get a more active role in the MCU.
However, despite the character rising to the ranks of an Avenger in the comics, it is more likely that he will help fill out Strange’s world in Infinity War. If a scene does take place in the Sanctum Sanctorum it would feel empty without Wong’s presence. We are still two years away from the next Avengers movie, but it‘s quickly coming together.
Avengers: Infinity War opens on May 4, 2018.
