Marvel fandom gave a polite applause when it was announced that Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch was officially selected to portray Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Most agree that he has the acting chops and gravitas to make a character who flies to different dimensions and realities, seem real and relatable.
A huge point of curiosity for fanboys is how Marvel and director Scott Derrickson will handle the comic book character’s appearance on the big-screen. Up until this point, Marvel Studios has made an effort to keep the adaptations of their characters as authentic and true to the page as possible. Doctor Strange is known for rocking a pencil-thin mustache and in recent years a goatee. Many have worried that a goateed Cumberbatch would be too close visually to Tony Stark, but it appears that Derrickson is unfazed. This morning he tweeted the first glimpse of what we might be able to expect the visual look of Strange to be:

It appears that they are keeping the goatee and you can even see the illusion of Strange’s trademark gray streak as well. Even more telling is that you can literally see the cosmos within Strange. It will be fun to see how they will balance out their explanation of Strange’s amazing abilities with magic versus science. As we saw in Interstellar, even scientific phenomenon can seem magical to the uninitiated.
There have also been recent rumors of three actors to be under consideration to play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One. According to a scoop from our friends over at Latino Review, Ken Watanabe (Godzilla), Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Bill Nighy (Love, Actually), have all been approached to play the role of the mystical teacher.
Watanabe seems to be clearly the best choice for a number of reasons. However, he has played similar roles in Batman Begins and The Last Samurai. It is possible that they have a new take on the character, that is why they are considering such a diverse spectrum of looks while casting the role.
