Another domino has fallen in the ongoing saga of the Warner Bros’ struggle to bring the DC universe to life on the big-screen. The studio’s problems with March’s release and the ensuing aftermath of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been well documented and the ripples continue to be felt throughout the industry.
One of the more intriguing developments has been WB’s intention to bring The Flash to the big-screen, while having a smash-hit television show simultaneously on the CW network. The approach stands in opposition to Marvel’s (misleading) assertion that “everything is connected” in the MCU, since there will be two live-action versions of the Flash running around in 2018. Grant Gustin wears the costume on TV, while Ezra Miller made his debut as Barry Allen in Batman v Superman and according to a report from Deadline, he will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa in his upcoming solo film. Here are some of the details of the recent developments on the film:
The Flash script is written by Seth Grahame-Smith, who was originally going to make his helming debut but exited the project over creative differences. Grahame-Smith’s take on the iconic DC Entertainment superhero is based on a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Lego Movie duo that once expected to helm the picture. Warner Bros is looking for the right chemical mix on its superhero picture line based on the DC Comics heroes that started with Batman V Superman, and the feeling internally was that Famuyiwa provided a vision that would resonate with young viewers and that vision was very compatible with the script that the studio is moving toward the start gate with.
The film is based on a treatment by Lord and Miller, who are regarded as two of the greatest comedic minds working in the business today. The hiring of Famuyiwa makes a world of sense due to his decades of experience behind the camera and his ability to connect his work with modern youth. Dope was one of the best films of 2015 (check out where we ranked it in our Top 15 of 2015) and exhibited the type of creative cinematography, humor, and energy, that you would hope for from a Flash movie.
The director’s style also feels like a natural fit with Ezra Miller’s indie sensibilities, who despite not appearing, could easily have fit into the cast of Dope. It should be mentioned that new DC Films head Geoff Johns made his name by relaunching The Flash in the pages of the comics, so it would make sense that this project would receive extra attention. Famuyiwa (The Wood, Brown Sugar) has been a writer on all of his films, so despite not being mentioned specifically, it would make sense that he would take another run at the script. There have also been rumored casting calls for characters such Captain Cold and Eobard Thawne, so it seems that there is much more to come on the film in the near future.
The Flash is scheduled for release on March 16th, 2018.
