Edward James Olmos Joins ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

After Agent Carter finishes its two week run, Agents of SHIELD will be returning in March with a promising second half of action. The team now has a super-powered agent in Skye, or Daisy. There will certainly be more Inhuman adventures and questions answered. That is in addition to the impact that the events of Agent Carter and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, have on the show as well.

Today Marvel continued to show that they aren’t taking any of their properties lightly and have secured another acting legend. Film and TV veteran Edward James Olmos, has agreed to join the Marvel cinematic universe and will make his debut when Agents of SHIELD returns in the spring.

The casting may seem surprising at first, since Olmos first came to fame when he was nominated for an Academy Award for his dramatic performance in Stand and Deliver. However in more recent years, he headlined the reboot of Battlestar Galactica, which was critically acclaimed for its ability to tell science fiction stories that relate to the real world. Olmos is not new to the genre and it’s clear that the showrunners were looking to add some more gravitas to the series. It’s another interesting piece to a cast that continues to add veterans with film credentials, such as Adriane Palicki, Patton Oswalt, and Bill Paxton in the past. Olmos will play Robert Gonzales, whose role has not been yet revealed, but who will have a huge impact on the show. Here is what Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, had to say about the casting in the official press release.

“Edward James Olmos brings an amazing gravitas to any role he inhabits, something we knew we needed for Robert Gonzales. When Olmos first appears on our series, everyone will have to take notice–including our favorite Agents.”

It is unclear how his character will fit into the series exactly, but the fact that the agents will have to “take notice” denotes a certain amount of respect. So perhaps he will, initially, be an ally or a ranking official. While there are a lot of character threads to tie up, it is also unclear who is the face of “evil” for SHIELD to face off with in the second half of the season.

It’s certainly a possibility that they are going against the known perceptions of the actor, much like they did with Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and give him a chance to twirl his mustache. Last season they brought film veteran Bill Paxton (Aliens) in as a friend and eventually he was revealed to be the big villain of the season. It could be possible that there is a similar trajectory in store for Olmos. In any case, it is easy to imagine Marvel wanting an actor of Olmos’ caliber in their feature films as well. So expect his role to have significance, whether he is ultimately friend or foe.
