There have been hypothetical debates between comic book fans for generations about who is better, DC Comics or Marvel Comics. DC Comics is known for having larger than life icons who are more god-like than superheroic. While Marvel Comics typically tell stories of relatable characters who despite having been blessed or cursed with extraordinary powers, still have to deal with very human issues. The debates can get philosophical. But usually they always come down to a couple of questions. Who is faster, Quicksilver or the Flash? Who is has more determination, Captain America or Batman? And who is more powerful, Superman or the Hulk?

Comic book writers have gotten a chance to tackle these questions in the past and in 1996 they took another swing at it with the teamup comic DC vs Marvel: The Showdown of the Century. In this comic series, a scenario was created where icons from both sides would battle it out, in a Mortal Kombat (minus the fatalities) styled combat for supremacy. Eleven matchups were made and five of them were decided by a fan vote. Here were the matchups:

These matchups were predetermined by the writers:

• Namor (Marvel) vs. Aquaman (DC)
• Elektra (Marvel) vs. Catwoman (DC)
• Quicksilver (Marvel) vs. Flash (DC)
• Jubilee (Marvel) vs. Robin (DC)
• Silver Surfer (Marvel) vs. Green Lantern (DC)
• Thor (Marvel) vs. Captain Marvel (DC)

These matchups were determined by the votes of fans:

• Captain America (Marvel) vs. Batman (DC)
• Spider-Man (Marvel) vs. Superboy (DC)
• Wolverine (Marvel) vs. Lobo (DC)
• Storm (Marvel) vs. Wonder Woman (DC)
• Hulk (Marvel) vs Superman (DC)
