CW is making news daily recently. They are preparing to unveil their fall DC television shows at Comic-Con at the end of the month and they are keeping the buzz high. The latest announcement comes from Variety (via IGN), that Stephen Amell’s (Arrow) cousin Robbie, has been cast as Ronnie Raymond, aka Firestorm. IGN explains:
Raymond, a maintenance worker at S.T.A.R. Labs and Dr. Caitlin Snow’s (Danielle Panabaker) fiancé, plays an important part in the freak accident that zaps hero Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) into The Flash.
In the comics, Firestorm was actually one person with two minds. In Raymond’s origin mishap, his mind was fused with that of a nuclear physicist, Martin Stein. It is yet to be seen how far they will be deviating from that story, but clearly that are not afraid of making the show heavy in fantasy and comic-book lore. As the creators of the show explain, this was always in the cards:
Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and myself designed the pilot and series to include Ronnie (aka Firestorm) — and to actually have someone with Robbie’s talent playing the role is beyond exciting. We can’t wait for viewers and fans of the character to check it out.
The biggest question that comes to mind is what type of villains and obstacles the writers are coming up with to challenge the heroes. As anyone who has seen X-Men: Days of Future Past can attest, just having super-speed can make you omni-potent. Having a sidekick who can go nuclear, literally, seems to be overkill. Perhaps they will have an eventual antagonistic relationship or as the pilot seems to suggest (spoilers)
