First Look at Harley Quinn and Will Smith’s Deadshot in SUICIDE SQUAD

There are many questions yet to be answered about Warner Bros’ upcoming adaption of Suicide Squad. It is clear that WB has been pouring in endless resources to make the movie a hit by assembling some of the best talent available to fill key roles including Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis in key roles. Director and writer David Ayer has a resume that would indicate that his movie will be gritty and hard-hitting, however we have never seen how his vision would translate to a comic book universe.

Ayer has been taking to Twitter to publicize his upcoming movie in recent weeks. He has been giving hints about character’s motivations and two week’s ago gave the world its first look at Leto’s Joker. Filming for the movie has been going for weeks now and we still have not gotten looks at the other iconic leads and supporting cast including Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Boomerang. Today Ayer released the first publicity photo of the Squad.

The entire Squad has a similar dark color scheme, which probably reflects the tone of the upcoming movie. It is also worth noting that they are posing in front of the Belle Reve prison, which serves as a super-maximum prison for high-powered criminals in the DC universe. Standing front and center is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who has been the second most anticipated reveal next to the Joker. Her costume is very reminiscent of her attire in recent DC Comics, yet set in the real world. Her jacket and hair has Quinn’s recognizable red and blue color scheme and Robbie’s facial expression speaks to the character being a faithful adaptation.

Will Smith as Floyd Lawton in ‘Suicide Squad’

Last week we got our first look at Smith as Floyd Lawton in civilian clothes. Today we get our first look at Smith in his tactical gear. It is surprising how cheap his outfit looks in Ayer’s publicity photo however. While it does have the deep red that Deadshot is known for, it looks almost as cheap as Deathlok’s costume in Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. It is also worth noting that he looks like the only member that isn’t thrilled to be there. It seems like the rest of the Squad can’t wait to cause havok, while he clearly has a reluctant expression. His daughter is in the film, so it is assumable that he is being blackmailed into his participation with the Suicide Squad. Ayer followed up with an individual character shot for Smith’s Deadshot, with his recognizable mask and eyepiece.

There is another saving grace to his outfit. It is equipped with Deadshot’s trademark forearm guns, which will certainly be involved in some fun sequences. The other members of the team look rather dreary. Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang is actually pretty close to his comic book counter part, complete with scars all over his face indicating he keeps getting into scraps. Cara Delvingne is shockingly gothic as Enchantress and the only member in the picture who actually has magical or supernatural powers. It will be interesting to see how Ayer handles her skill set. Joel Kinnaman is front and center as the group’s field leader Rick Flagg. Other supporting characters include Adam Beach as Slipknot, Jay Hernadez as El Diablo, Karen Fukuhara jumps straight off of the page as Katana, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is playing Killer Croc. It is surprising that Killer Croc will not be a motion-capture creation. Hopefully he plays better on-screen than he does in the publicity photo. Get ready because there is much more to come on the Suicide Squad
