The upcoming Supergirl pilot is currently in production and today the public got its first look at the DC Comics’ character for the first time. The series has been making waves recently with some radical casting decisions that have drawn additional attention to the production. They cast against type for Superman’s sidekick Jimmy Olsen and have also brought two actors, Dean Cain (Lois & Clark) and Helen Slater (Supergirl), who have formerly worn the Superman shield on their chest onto the series. It has yet to be seen if this is simply stunt casting or if there truly is a master plan. However Berlanti Productions is shepherding the show and after the surprising success of Arrow and The Flash, the latest project has earned the benefit of the doubt.
This is the first look that we have gotten of the Supergirl costume. It seems the design of the suit favors the darkened and muted colors of the Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, while seeming less busy and alien altogether. The costume was created by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood who explains, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.” They have kept the traditional color scheme and the iconic ‘S’ shield, while mirroring the modern cinematic look.
It is easy to imagine that suit standing side by side with Grant Gustin’s Flash costume as well, which is an eventuality if the series is a hit. This is the first look at Melissa Benoist (Glee) in character, while sporting Supergirl’s trademark blond hair. We will have to see Supergirl in motion to make a fair determination, however from the picture Benoist does not look especially convincing or powerful. It may be part of her hero’s journey to be underestimated and forced to grow into her heroic destiny, but for now it looks like really professional cosplay photography.
