Another popular comic book property that will be brought to the small screen this fall is the adaptation of DC Comic’s Constantine. Also known as Hellblazer in comics, Constantine tells the story of morally ambiguous British magician John Constantine, who becomes an occult detective investigating paranormal activities. It was created by industry legend Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta), Steve Bissette and Jamie Delano. This is the same property that was adapted for film in 2005 by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and starred Keanu Reeves. It was a mild success, but did come under fire from purists who were upset with how many changes were made to the core of the character. The television project is being brought to the screen by David Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Blade) Neil Marshall and Daniel Cerone. In a recent interview with Variety he assures comic fans that this will be a more faithful adaptation:

“I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers. Fans old and new are going to be in for a treat,”

This project should not be of interest to only comic book fans, but also to the fans of detective and supernatural shows which are very popular right now. They have cast British actor Matt Ryan (Layer Cake) as the series lead and are clearly trying to stay as close to the tone of the books (as network t.v. will allow). This fall is shaping up to be quite a crowded field with so many comic book adaptations on the way. We can’t wait to bring you more as details are uncovered, but until then, enjoy your first official look at John Constantine… Pretty close, huh? Well, they have run into an issue with a main character who chain smokes on tv, until they figure it out the hint of smoke is a nice allusion.
