Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy) is currently shooting one of the most daring reboots of a major Hollywood property ever. He is filming the updated version of the Ghostbusters, the 1984 film that is one of the biggest comedy hits of all time. The original starred Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, as New York’s only answer to the paranormal forces and ghouls invading the city. In Feig’s reboot, he has chosen to go recast the four leads as females. The new movie will star Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, as the quartet to battle supernatural forces in the Big Apple this time around. It was also recently revealed that Thor’s Chris Hemsworth has joined the cast to play the Ghostbusters’ secretary.
When the new cast was announced, the internet went into an uproar out of concern that the legacy of the Ghostbusters would not be respected. It seems that Feig is going out of his way to assure fans that this version will indeed have the look and feel of the classic movie. Recently he has taken to Twitter to update the public on the production.

There are at least three iconic images from the original Ghostbusters franchise, which immiediately come to mind when the movie is mentioned. The proton packs, the jumpsuits with the logo on the shoulder, and the customized hearse, which is known belovedly as Ecto-1. It seems that at least two out of three will be making it into the reboot, which should give a small level of assurance to Ghostbusters’ purists.

The look of the new proton packs are remarkably similar to the ones that first appeared over thirty years ago. It seems that the overall design has been kept, while it appears it may be a little more streamlined and efficient for the new Ghostbusters to haul around. It is also rumored that fan-favorite ghost, Slimer, will be returning to the franchise. If it is true, it is unclear if he will be redesigned or be the same disgusting green glob of snot that everyone fell in love with in the 80’s. In any case, it is another indication that Feig is looking to bring back the spirit of the original. Surely they are looking to capitalize on the nostalgic elements of the franchise, much like Jurassic World was able to push the series further, while still bringing in audiences who enjoyed the original. There is much more to come on the Ghostbusters, so make sure to keep checking in for the latest!
The Ghostbusters reboot will fly into theaters on July 22nd, 2016.
