Marvel will be introducing many new faces to their vast film and television universe in 2016. Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Spider-Man, will all make their presence felt within the next 12 months in various films. This spring Marvel will return with the second season of the hugely successful Daredevil on Netflix.

The second season will be guided by a new set of showrunners after the departure of series creator Drew Goddard and showrunner Steven DeKnight. New showrunners, Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez, are looking to retain what made the first season a success, while streamlining the show with the origin story out of the way.

There will be many new iconic characters from Daredevil lore making their first appearance in the MCU and it has fans salivating at the possibilities. Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) join the show as Elektra and Frank Castle aka the Punisher. Recently new information and photos were released via EW and gives Marvel fans even more reason to get excited for the return of Daredevil

The Punisher

”People have been coming up to me on the streets of New York saying, ‘Do not mess this up.’ This character has resonated with law enforcement and military. He’s brought the war home with him in the worst possible way. And the best thing about him is that if he offends you, he just doesn’t care.”

Seeing the Punisher depicted by Marvel Studios is probably the series’ biggest draw. In the EW story they describe how he is an “unstoppable menace,” who stalks his enemies like The Terminator. No one handles characterization of their comic book heroes better than Marvel right now, so after three failed film attempts it looks like its time for the Punisher the city of New York deserves. Jon Bernthal is an amazing actor who can fill out an anti-hero role like few others. It is only a matter of time before he is forever connected with the character.

A New Brand of Punishing Justice

“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves. Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”

The Punisher is not a “good guy.” Unlike Wilson Fisk, who was introduced in the the third episode of the first season. We will meet Frank Castle early on and even follow along from his perspective. With mass shootings a constant story in the daily news, it will be a tricky tightrope that the creators will have to walk in presenting the character. Will audiences take to him, or become appalled? We will find out this spring.

The Morality Struggle

Marvel's Daredevil

“He has a different moral code. Matt is a devout Catholic — and you rarely see a character who’s a devote anything on TV. Frank has Hammurabi’s Code. It’s like letting a great white shark into the water.”

Co-showrunner Marco Ramirez is describing each character’s center of morality. Daredevil is a unique character in comic books because he identifies so closely with his faith. While using Hammurabi’s Code as the context for the Punisher’s actions is the perfect template for the anti-hero, who is the personification of “Eye for and Eye” action.

Elektra

Marvel's Daredevil

“Matt’s a deeply moral complicated guy and she’s [Elektra] just the best bad girlfriend you can possibly have. She does everything wrong and attractive, she’s his id, the wild side. Matt is always taming his wild side. Elektra just lets it out. He’s both repulsed and deeply drawn to that.”

The duplicitous relationship that Daredevil has with Elektra is one of comic books greatest love stories and tragedies. Having the benefit of an entire season to flesh out their complicated love affair, should give the duo the room they need to become fully realized. She is yet another character and dark reflection of the vigilante lifestyle that should help make an even more complicated character study of the Man without Fear.

The second season of Daredevil premieres in 2016.
