Last week filming began on the long-awaited adaptation of Marvel Comics’ Deadpool. The Merc with a Mouth has made a meteoric ascension up Marvel’s ranks in recent years, becoming one of the more popular characters in their library after his introduction in 1991. It is due largely to his unique characteristics that are tailor-made for a post-modern era.
Ryan Reynolds will be playing Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, after years of campaigning for the job. His costume is a spot-on adaptation and the role was literally written for Reynolds to own. Wilson is a former Special Forces agent who is prematurely struck by cancer. He undergoes an experimental procedure, Weapon X, and gains an accelerated healing factor that is even more efficient than Wolverine’s. The procedure also drove him insane, which is part of the “charm” of the lunatic mercenary.
The upcoming movie is rumored to be an extremely faithful adaptation of the zany material, in which the lead character can be decapitated, while speaking to the audience through the fourth wall…at the same time. It is hard to foresee how big of a hit Fox Studios has on their hands, but they undoubtedly have a comic book film that will be remembered. The publicity campaign for the movie officially kicked off today, when Reynolds tweeted the first picture of himself in costume as Deadpool.

They have included all of the details of his trademark look, complete with all of the straps, buckles, and pouches that you would expect from the 90’s creation. The picture also speaks to the movie’s tone that should be action-packed, yet full of irreverent humor. The photo is actually a homage to the classic 70’s photo of Burt Reynolds on a bearskin rug. One of the trademarks of Deadpool is his expressive, yet masked face. One eye seems to be squinting which would indicate that the mask will be able to show emotion. It is unclear if the expressiveness will be acheived through animatronics, CGI, or a combination of the two. Regardless, fans should start to get excited because Deadpool will be talking directly to you in theaters less than a year from now.
