The new feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s It is blazing full speed ahead. The upcoming two-part movie will be directed by Cary Fukunaga who is fresh of his Emmy win with the cinematic True Detective series he made for HBO. Taking on It is a big task, being that it is one of King’s most well-known horror properties, due to the wildly successful novel and the miniseries from the early 1990’s.

According to Variety, Fukunaga has cast Pennywise, the demonic clown who also happens to be the most iconic character in the film. The role was originally played by Tim Curry and is one of the more memorable monsters ever put on the screen, despite only appearing on TV in live-action. It follows a group of kids who are terrorized by a monster who lurks in their neighborhood. Over a summer they band together to get rid of the creature, who has chosen the form of a devilish clown. Years pass and the group comes together as adults when their childhood monster comes back to haunt them as adults.

Fukunaga has settled on Will Poulter (Son of Rambow, We Are the Millers) who is in the final stages of negotiations and can last be seen as the menacing Gally, in The Maze Runner. This has come to the surprise of many who were anticipating an older, seasoned actor to assume the role of Pennywise. It has been reported that his villainous turn in Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu’s upcoming film, The Revenant, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, is what got Poulter a studio push for an audition. Once he was in front of Fukunaga he allegedly blew him away with his performance. The casting of Pennywise is doubly crucial since he will have to carry two films. However, after seeing how Fukunaga cast True Detective, he has earned the trust in his judgement. We should learn even more about the film when the core group of kids are cast next.
