Avengers: Age of Ultron. Terminator: Genisys. Interstellar. Blade Runner. Chappie. These are all movies that are in theaters or have sequels coming soon that deal with robotic artificial intelligence threatening or judging the value of humanity. It seems that this theme will be explored once more, in the upcoming science fiction thriller, Ex Machina.
The creative mind of Alex Garland has written some of the best science fiction movies of the new millennium. He wrote the screenplays to 28 Days Later, Sunshine, as well as the criminally underappreciated Dredd. He is making his directorial debut with Ex Machina and he has cast two stars that are relatively unknown today, but who should be household names a year from now. Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac both star in the most anticipated movie of the decade, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will surely make them fan favorites by this winter. In the summer of 2016, Isaac will also be playing one of the biggest Marvel Comics’ villains ever when he portrays Apocalypse, in X-Men: Apocalypse.
The movie has had positive advance buzz and is on many critics’ most anticipated films of the year lists. It looks like a twisted tale of science fiction, that seems to combine elements of Frankenstein, Splice, Blade Runner, and a whole lot more. Enjoy the trailer.
Official Synopsis:
Alex Garland, writer of “28 Days Later” and “Sunshine,” makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, “Ex Machina.” Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).
Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.
Ex Machina will make its debut at the SXSW and will premiere in theaters on April 10th, 2015.
