Fox Studios’ long-awaited film adaptation for Marvel Comics’ Deadpool is getting ready to shoot next month in Vancouver. Ryan Reynolds will be headlining the movie as the character that he first portrayed in the much maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, Deadpool was not faithfully adapted in that film, so next year’s solo film will serve as a reboot for the character.
The cast has been slowly filling out, with the comedic T.J. Miller (Big Hero 6) rumored to have signed on for a supporting role previously. There is another player that has been added to the cast and she is more known for cracking skulls than jokes. MMA star Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6, Haywire) has joined the cast as the villainous mutant Angel Dust, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. The character has the expected skill-set of enhanced strength, agility, speed, by juicing up her adrenaline levels which also makes her impervious to pain. Clearly she will be brawling with the Merc with the Mouth.
An unexpected bit of news was included in THR’s report. X-Men’s Colossus who last appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past is reportedly set to make an appearance in Deadpool as well. The size of the role is not known, however it is hard to imagine Deadpool facing off against the invincible Russian with steel skin. At this point it is also unclear if Daniel Cudmore will be returning to the role or not. In any case, is an awesome opportunity for comedy, since the two rumbling would be the classic scenario of the irresistible force (Deadpool) against an immovable object (Colossus). Not only would it potentially be a comedic action set piece, but it is clear that Fox is looking to closely tie Deadpool with the X-Men film universe, which is true to the character’s roots. However, secretly I hope that THR got their signals crossed with characters from the X-Men universe and it will turn out to be Cable, not Colossus, showing up. We will see…
Deadpool will be released on February 12th, 2016.
