Gareth Edwards’ plate is full. It’s full of classic science-fiction awesomeness. Edwards, the director of this year’s Godzilla reboot, has had a great few months. In May, he released his first major American studio film for Legendary Pictures and it was a smash-hit. He successfully reinvigorated and rebooted the Godzilla franchise by both bringing it back to it’s roots and by showing how modern-day special effects could bring the classic creature to life.
On the heels of the box-office success of the film, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Edwards is their choice to helm the first spin-off installment of their upcoming Star Wars relaunch. There have been no details about which character or plotline will be explored, but regardless, this makes Edwards the luckiest geek on Earth. Directly after the announcement Legendary congratulated Edwards on the new gig despite it being for a rival studio, showing the respect Star Wars garners around the film industry. Then the studio proclaimed that Edwards would be back to direct Godzilla 2. However, most industry insiders felt that it was a gesture of goodwill, not a true possibility since his schedule will be jam-packed with Star Wars for the coming years. A few weeks later the studio announced that Godzilla would be battling classic monsters Mothra, Ghidorah and Rodan and the excitement level cranked up even higher for the sequel.
The studio is clearly moving forward with their sequel plans and they have a way to keep Edwards on board as director. They are simply giving him enough time to shoot Star Wars. The newly announced released date for the sequel to Godzilla will be June 4th, 2018.
