You might have seen a haunted house movie before. But you have never seen a Guillermo del Toro haunted house movie before. There are only a few directors who dominate a film genre the way that del Toro has mastered creating fantasy-horror pictures. All of his past movies from Hellboy to Pan’s Labyrinth, have strong elements of horror. It seems that he is going all in this time and is crafting a true old-fashioned horror film.

Crimson Peak is a passion project for the director that has been years in the making. He has assembled an extremely able cast who are well-suited for the period piece. Tom Hiddleston is set to star in a string of movies catapulted by the success of playing Marvel’s Loki. It will be interesting to see if he is a draw away from the comic book franchise. From Zero Dark Thirty to Interstellar, Jessica Chastain continues to pick high-caliber films, which bears well for the potential of the upcoming movie. Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Charlie Hunnan (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) round out the cast in what looks like a perfect movie for the Halloween season.

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.

Crimson Peak hits theaters October 16th, 2015.
