It was only a matter of time before Hasbro announced that they would be producing a My Little Pony movie. Luckily it is not going to be a live-action adaptation starring The Rock, as many have surely assumed would be part of the eventual announcement.

Instead Hasbro Studios has gone in a more traditional direction, by producing the film as an animated feature through Allspark Pictures. Allspark is Hasbro’s new feature film producing partner. This will be the second film on their slate. The first is the currently filming live-action adaptation of Jem and the Holograms, which will be released in October 2015. Here is what Variety reported on the new deal to make a My Little Pony feature film:

Hasbro Studios will take the reigns of “My Little Pony,” producing and financing it in-house. It is in discussion with studios to release the film “on the broadest possible number of screens,” said Stephen Davis, president of Hasbro Studios and global entertainment and licensing for Hasbro Inc. “We’ve very excited about the potential of that movie.”

My Little Pony will be a fully animated feature film written by Joe Ballarini, who wrote Fox’s, Ice Age: Continental Drift. My Little Pony has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years. What began as a toy line marketed to young girls in 1983, has expanded into a worldwide phenomenon over the past thirty years. The license has enjoyed a huge resurgence in pop culture over the past five years as well. So it is not surprising that Hasbro is looking to capitalize on the generations of fans who adore the property. The kids that grew up on My Little Pony, will now be of age to share it with their daughters. And the circle of life…and marketing continues…

My Little Pony is targeted for release in 2017.
