Hawkgirl is Cast for ‘Arrow’/’The Flash’ Spin-Off Show

Arrow and The Flash are spinning off a show for the CW network this fall which will combine supporting characters, both heroes and villains, from each show. Producer Greg Berlanti explained that “the new project will also include three major DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a TV series.” This immediately raised the antennae of fans all over the world, as speculation increased about who those mystery characters would be.

Another major character was announced today for the still untitled spin-off. Newcomer Ciara Renee has been cast as Kendra Saunders, also known as the winged hero, Hawkgirl. Here is how Deadline describes the role.

“In the new series, Saunders is a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker Hawkgirl.”

This seems to be a direct translation from the comic books, complete with Saunders’ walk-in alter ego. Hawkgirl is capable of flight, has enhanced strength, durability, and regenerative healing. Renee is joining a cast that is led by reprising actors Brandon Routh as Atom, Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold, Dominic Purcell as Heatwave, Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein, and Caity Lotz in a still unspecified role.

It is unclear what incident will bring this eclectic cast of characters together. However, we should have a more clear idea in the coming weeks as both Arrow and The Flash approach their season finales. It’s hard to imagine all of the characters being featured every episode without feeling overloaded. Possibly the heroes will be revolving in and out of the show, depending on whose arc is being focused on. It could feel more like an anthology and would clearly distinguish itself from the other superhero shows, which focus around a singular hero.

In any case, it is exciting to see Hawkgirl being brought to life. What DC hero (or villain), do you think will be announced next? Let us know on the comment boards, , , and !
