Just when you thought it couldn’t get any harder to find something to watch on Netflix…things just got more complicated. We have all spent 15 minutes to an hour staring blankly at the television screen, because there is simply too many options on Netflix’s queue. Things will only get tougher in April when Marvel releases their first of many Netflix exclusive shows starting with Daredevil. There is even a Legend of Zelda show in the works as well. Clearly Netflix is covering all their bases, and demographics, while expanding their empire.
The new Inspector Gadget show is already airing in the UK and will make its debut in the U.S. in March exclusively on Netflix. American audiences are familiar with the character from his 1980’s cartoon and the live-action film which starred Ferris Bueller’s Matthew Broderick, in one of the worst casting choices in human history. The film series was successful however and Netflix is looking to capitalize on the popularity of the brand. The new version is in 3D animation with a 26 episode season and will feature all of the characters that made the original cartoon so successful. Erik Barmack, VP of global independent content at Netflix explained their strategy.
“It’s one of those shows where we’re able to hit a few different audiences. We think that kids are going to love the show … but it’s also going to get some co-viewing because there is a generation of parents who grew up on the original.”
Another property that Netflix is rebooting from the early 1980’s is Danger Mouse. The UK cartoon aired in the states on Nickelodeon at that time. It followed the adventures of a white mouse, who happens to be one of the world’s most able spies. It is also where the Gnarls Barkley producer’s name originated from. The show is thirty years old and severely dated, so it should be interesting to see what kind of gloss they put on Danger Mouse to bring him into modern times. The show is slated for a 26 half-hour episodes that will make their premiere on Netflix in spring of 2016.
