Is BATMAN V SUPERMAN Really In Trouble?

Warner Bros. has finally gotten their act together and started the DC Extended Universe, which has been a long time coming. It started with Man of Steel, which got some mixed reviews and didn’t break $1 billion worldwide, and now the universe continues to expand with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. You’re getting Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Cyborg – so many great DC characters will finally be able to share the screen together. However, some recent reports from certain sources might be spelling trouble, much like what Man of Steel went through, which is one of the worst things we could be hearing right now.

Some execs at Warner, and some others, have seen the film and according to Drew McWeeny at HitFix, the studio isn’t feeling 100% confident right now.

“My guess is what’s going to happen is based on what I’m hearing… I’ve talked to enough people who have seen the film now that I’m starting to sweat a little, is Justice League is going to get moved back and that Ben Affleck Batman movie, that’s what’s going to end up in that spot. My guess is they’re going to throw whatever money it takes at Ben Affleck to make that Batman film happen sooner rather than later. They’re going to need to rebuild again, they’re going to need to win people over, they’re going to need to lay some different groundwork. I don’t think this is going to be the springboard into the Justice League that they wanted it to be.”

Mario Francisco-Robles at Latino-Review makes a point of saying that Warner Bros. isn’t really scared, but just nervous, and this is an important point. Being nervous is understandable, because a lot of us are nervous about this film and how its executed. The studio obviously wants this to break $1 billion and do Avengers numbers, as it should based on its premise.. You’re dealing with Superman and Batman – on the totem pole of superheroes, these two are at the very top, #1 and #2. This is a movie that absolutely should make up to and over $1 billion worldwide at the box office.

Man of Steel was a superhero film that wasn’t for everybody, with some feeling that the character of Superman didn’t resemble the Superman from the comics, or the Superman they knew as a child. Some felt it wasn’t fun enough and a lot of people had problems with the collateral damage in the third act. It might be safe to say that Snyder isn’t going to make that same mistake again. If you even saw it as a mistake… They’ve even addressed Superman’s recklessness in the trailers for this film. Hopefully, the reason some executives are nervous is because the film is made for comic book fans and may not be easily accessible for general audiences…which is good news for us, at least. Technically a film such as this should be able to please fans of the source material as well as general audiences equally, but, if the scale is tipped towards pleasing the geeks…that’s exciting to hear!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25th, 2016
