Is this the Next Robocop? Check Out the Awesome New Trailer for ‘Chappie’ starring Hugh Jackman

Things just got a lot more interesting for the movie Chappie. In the teaser trailer that was released a couple of months ago, the movie seemed almost like a robotic Rudy. An inspirational tale of a robot proving that it has worth and a place in society. The full-length trailer that was released today shows a much different and more hard-hitting tone for Neill Blomkamp’s third major theatrical feature. It appears that this story will be about a struggle for survival on an even grander scale than was previously hinted. We thought we were getting a Short Circuit reboot, but from the looks of the trailer…Blomkamp might be giving us the next Robocop.

The threat of advanced artificial intelligence turning on humanity is a theme that is becoming increasingly prevalent as we become more dependent on technology. It looks like this film will stand out because the story is actually framed from the robot’s perspective. In District 9 and to a lesser degree in Elysium, Blomkamp has injected his films with a social consciousness and message, in addition to jaw-dropping special effects. The casting of Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine) and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) seems spot on. Jackman is playing an aggressive military figure looking to track down the sentient robot created by Patel. All of the actors appear fully invested and Chappie, played by Sharlto Copley (Maleficent), seems as real as any of them. This looks like one that is worth getting excited about. Enjoy the trailer!

Official Synopsis

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

Chappie will be in theaters on March, 6th, 2015.
