Jared Leto Teases His Transformation Into The Joker

Yesterday, Suicide Squad director David Ayer treated fans to a picture of the first cast read for his upcoming DC Comics’ blockbuster. Suddenly all the rumors and speculation became a reality. Instead of reading the cast list, it was right there in full photographic color. Check it out.

There are some unexpected additions to the cast. Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack, and Adam Beach have all been added to the production. There hasn’t been any official word on the roles that they are playing, however Latino Review has dropped the rumor that Barinholtz will play Dr. Hugo Strange, Beach will play Ravan, and Parrack will play Deathstroke. We will see how that pans out, what is known is that the cast looks dynamic and ready to work.

However, there is one cast member whose absence is glaring. Jared Leto, who is soon to be known simply as the Joker. Last week, Leto teased via social media that the transformation into the character had begun. It started with his arrival in Toronto, that was followed by a dramatic hair and beard cut. His hair had been bleached blonde, presumably so he could dye it green. So it did seem odd that he wouldn’t be present at the first full cast read. Well, he was there… Someone had to take the picture after all.

The picture is a clear homage to The Killing Joke, the classic Batman story where the Joker cripples Batgirl. While he isn’t showing off the trademark smile, his hair is green and his skin appears pale. It has been heavily rumored that this iteration of the Joker would be taking his inspiration from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. If true it would give some cohesion to the cinematic universe, since Ben Affleck’s Batman in Dawn of Justice is already clearly influenced by that particular storyline as well. In that book, the Joker is characterized by a white business suit, high cheek bones, and an effeminate flavor.

As production on Suicide Squad begins we can expect to get more teases via social media. The Joker might be the most anticipated reveal, however seeing the look that they have designed for Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, and others, fall closely behind the maniacal clown. We will be here to deliver you the latest, so make sure to keep check back for the scoop.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th, 2016.
