The CW network will be launching their latest DC Comics’ television show in just two weeks, with the premiere of Legends of Tomorrow. It has been well publicized that the series would be combining many fan-favorite supporting characters from both The Flash and Arrow, including Atom, White Canary, Captain Cold, Heatwave, Firestorm and Hawkgirl among others.
The show’s premise is that time traveler Rip Hunter has come from an apocalyptic future to assemble a band of “heroes,” to stop the maniacal Vandal Savage from taking over the world. Most of the show’s marketing and focus has been on the band of heroes and anti-heroes that will lead the show. However, what has not been at the forefront of the show’s publicity is that series’ producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim, have extremely lofty goals for the show. They plan on using the platform to show many classic storylines and characters from the history of DC Comics, that won’t be appearing in their cinematic universe. So viewers and DC Comics’ fans should be surprised weekly, by the ambition of the show.
Today it was revealed via EW, that DC Comics’ cowboy hero Jonah Hex, will be appearing in the show. Hex is an American Civil War era bounty hunter, whose most distinguishing feature is a horribly scarred face. The character made his first appearance in the comics in 1972 and is probably most recently recognized from the failed 2010 feature film, Jonah Hex, which starred Josh Brolin as the title character. The film was one of the biggest flops of the year, so the announcement that the character would be coming back to live-action does come as a bit of a surprise. Marc Guggenheim explains the reasoning behind the character’s inclusion:
“Ever since we decided that Legends would involve time travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West. But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply must include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”
There has not yet been an announcement on the casting of Hex, but that is sure to come down the pipeline shortly. However, perhaps what is more important is that the creators of the show are not afraid to swing for the fences and the show may have even more surprises. Fortunately we will not have to wait long to find out.
