JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Is the Next DC Animated Feature

The struggles that Warner Bros have had bringing their iconic DC comic book characters to life in live-action have been well documented. Past failures such as Green Lantern and the divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have overshadowed past successes, as they prepare to unleash new features such as Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman. These new properties haven’t come out of a vacuum, as WB Animation has had even more critical success than their Marvel counterparts. This is the sandbox where WB tests the viability of their IP before bringing them to the big screen. We have seen this with such past releases as Wonder Woman and Batman: Assault on Arkham and we may be getting an indication of what property the studio may be contemplating next.

As the world eagerly awaits the R-rated release of Batman: The Killing Joke, a new detail was uncovered about the July release of the animated movie. According to British Board of Film Classification, there is an extra on the upcoming Blu-Ray release which will introduce their next animated feature, Justice League Dark. The segment has a running time of 7 minutes and 50 seconds, but no further information on the project was provided.

The reason that this is even more interesting is that director Guillermo del Toro has been championing a Justice League Dark movie for years. At one point he was even set to direct a live-action version before stepping down. However, this past March he was quoted as saying that he had turned in a script and the decision was in the studio’s hands. The project is based on the comic of the same name, which teams up many of DC Comics scariest and most supernatural heroes including, Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, Spectre, and Jason Blood.

The upcoming animated film will serve to introduce many of the lesser known characters from this dark corner of the DC universe. Ultimately, Justice League Dark’s future hinges on the audience’s response to Suicide Squad in August, another quirky and lesser known property that should grease the wheels for the supernatural film. We should be getting a trailer in the future so stay tuned.

Batman: The Killing Joke will be available on Digital HD on July 26 and Blu-Ray/DVD on August 2nd.
