There are several ways for an action star to settle into the twilight of a career. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to be breaking all of the rules of aging in Hollywood. Whether it was his role in The Expendables, on The Apprentice, or as the governor of California, Schwarzenegger refuses to go into his golden years quietly.
His ability to open blockbuster movies is behind him, however the actor seems to keep choosing projects that stretch his ability, or just flat out tickles his funny bone. For the record, Schwarzenegger’s latest effort Killing Gunther, falls firmly into the second category.
The action-comedy about a team of bumbling assassins who are contracted to kill the infamous mercenary, Gunther, dropped its first trailer today. From the looks of the two-minute reel, this could either be the spiritual successor to an Edgar Wright movie, or the worst Saturday Night Live skit that you’ve ever seen.
Speaking of, the movie is directed by SNL’s Taran Killam in his big-screen directorial debut. Killam does double-duty, as he also co-stars in the movie as the ringleader of the assassins out to eliminate Gunther. The comedy also stars The Avengers’ alum Cobie Smulders, along with Saturday Night Live veteran Bobby Moynihan. After a lifetime of sculpting his body to perfection, it’s interesting to see Schwarzenegger at a point of his career where he lacks vanity and is simply enjoying himself. Will that create a good movie? Probably not, but there’s only one way to find out…
Official Synopsis:
A group of eccentric assassins are fed up with Gunther, the world’s greatest hit-man and decide to kill him but their plan turns into a series of bungled encounters as Gunther seems to always be one step ahead.
Killing Gunther opens on October 20th, 2017.
