Every few months a filmmaker or actor will comment that the life span of movies inspired by comics has run its course. However, each year the genre continues to grow, due to creative new approaches and by combining superheroes with other well-liked genres. From the looks of the upcoming X-Men film, Logan, the genre still has a lot of life left in the tank.
Director James Mangold is back for his second Wolverine film, after 2013’s The Wolverine. He set the upcoming film in the year 2029, in order to give his story enough room to breathe, apart from the other installments in the franchise. At this point in the X-Men timeline, mutants have either died out or went deep underground. It’s clear that Mangold is attempting to combine elements of indie drama and westerns, along with the iconic comic book run, “Old Man Logan.”
We reported last summer that X-23 (Dafne Keen) would be a major part of the film’s plot and the Wolverine clone takes center stage in the newest trailer. It should take viewers no longer than seeing the two blades protrude from her fists to realize that this take will be no holds barred. We also get a longer look at the paramilitary unit known as the Reavers, who have cybernetic limbs that look ripe to be dismembered. Boyd Holbrook plays Donald Pierce, the leader of the militia who is an enemy to all mutants. While we also get another look at Professor X, who looks to be on his last legs, which will presumably lead to a bittersweet ending. There is a lot to look forward to. Enjoy the trailer!
