Loki and Heimdall to Appear in ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’

It seems that we will be in for all sorts of surprises next year when  Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters. Fans can expect to see cameos of brand new characters to the Marvel cinematic universe and a few familiar faces will be returning as well.

In an interview with The Telegraph, actor Idris Elba (Thor: The Dark World, The Wire) casually discussed his involvement in the Thor movies and he let it slip that he has recently shot a scene for Age of Ultron:

“Ironically, yesterday I had to…” Elba chuckles. He’s not meant to talk about this, but he clearly enjoys doing things he’s not meant to do. “I’m in Avengers,” he reveals. He means that his Thor character, deity-cum-sentry Heimdall, appears in Age of Ultron, the second installment of the superhero ensemble franchise. “And I’m doing a scene with Chris Hemsworth [who plays Thor] and Tom Hiddleston [Loki], and they’re like, [whispers] – ‘Aren’t you [meant to be] in Ibiza?”

Whoa! Somebody in Marvel Studios is banging their fist down on their desk in anger right now. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has become one of the most popular characters in the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) and by far the most well-rounded villain. If Marvel wanted this news to be public, they would have certainly made mention of it at last week’s huge event where they announced their future projects. Add to the fact that Elba called working on Marvel movies “torture” during the course of the interview and suddenly Heimdall’s future in Thor: Ragnarok seems to be sealed.

Elba’s character Heimdall was the keeper of the Rainbow Bridge, a transportation system through the cosmos, and is a trusted ally of Thor’s. It is unclear why his presence would be needed in the very Earth-centric Age of Ultron story. What is known is that in the film Tony Stark will be funding the Avengers, while Captain America leads them, at least initially. However, in most of the footage shown so far, Thor seems to be missing from a lot of the action. Perhaps, he is on a side quest that has impact on his homeworld as well.

This is of further interest because Chris Hemsworth’s Thor hasn’t made an appearance in a Marvel film without Loki’s involvement. Hemsworth recently discussed how he felt that Loki’s constant presence has teathered Thor slightly:

“I mean, [I] loved working with Tom,” says Hemsworth, “and that relationship is so much fun. But that also kept us in a bit of a box, because, you know, three films on one relationship, how much further can you go? What else can you do different? It was nice to have a whole different sort of motivation.”

The end of Thor: The Dark World left the balance of power in Loki’s hands, as he secretly has taken control of the throne of Asguard. It is likely that Elba, Hemsworth, and Hiddleston, likely have shot a late addition scene that will tie the events of Age of Ultron into the larger MCU plotline. What doesn’t add up is that Loki is thought to be dead. So it remains to be seen how it will fit into the plot of The Avengers sequel. It could be a flashback or does Thor find out about the treachery committed by Loki in The Dark World in the Age of Ultron? It should also be noted that Baron Von Strucker was shown to be in possession of Loki’s scepter at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which has an infinity stone in it. Could Loki be making a play to get it back? It opens up a big can of worms, but that is kind of what Marvel is known for…the possibilities are wide open.
