The new big-screen interpretation of the world of Gotham City is beginning to come into focus as Batman’s greatest adversaries are cast for the big screen. Last week we caught wind of Jared Leto circling in on the role of the Joker in the Suicide Squad and future films. While the Joker certainly will not have a large role in the movie or be a part of the squad, his lovably insane girlfriend Harley Quinn, is a core member of the team.
According to reports from Collider, actress Margot Robbie has secured the role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Robbie had been rumored as one of the four actors initially in talks for parts in the film including, Tom Hardy, Will Smith, and Ryan Gosling, who is rumored to have declined the role of the Joker. After bursting onto the scene in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie has lined up a co-starring role in Focus opposite Smith, the lead in Z for Zachariah with Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and as Jane in the upcoming Tarzan adaptation. Clearly she is being positioned for stardom and playing Harley Quinn could end up being a signature role.
Warner Bros. hasn’t officially announced what characters they have chosen to make up the mercenary team. However, despite earlier reports that they were going with lesser known villains, expect the other yet to be named characters, to be more well known icons of the DC universe. Director David Ayer (Fury) is rewriting the script and he has previously described it as the “Dirty Dozen with super-villains.” If this is his shot at a comic book franchise, his filmography suggests that he goes for the highest quality actors and doesn’t pull punches.
Harley Quinn was a character first introduced in the 1990’s, Batman: The Animated Series. She was a psychiatrist working at Arkham Asylum who began treating the Joker. She fell in love with the crazed clown and goes on to be his most trusted accomplice in crime. Since that time she has gone on to be one of Batman’s greatest foes on her own merit. She is by far one of the more popular modern villains according to statistical data and Comic Cons all over the world.
It is still unclear where this film will fall chronologically. You would naturally assume that a heist on this scale would be on the ever vigilant Batman’s radar. Could the events at the end of Dawn of Justice lead to Batman being incapacitated, captured or worse? Or is the film taking place at the same time as Dawn of Justice? (How badass would it be to have Luthor pull out some kryptonite from seemingly no where in Dawn of Justice? Then months later we get the backstory on Luthor’s funded mission to secure the greatest weapon against the Man of Steel in Suicide Squad.) Or will Affleck’s Batman pop up for a cameo anyways? Including the Suicide Squad in the DC lineup of films this early on, opens up endless opportunities for storytelling. Plus, the cast is already set for the next solo Batman film. All they need is a good script.
Suicide Squad assaults theaters August 5th, 2016.
