Marvel Studios did not want to let this piece of news drag on much longer. As was reported yesterday, Krysten Ritter has been chosen by Marvel to lead her own 13 episode television series to air on Netflix. Marvel typically likes to let the buzz grow when casting their roles, however they choose to end speculation in less than 24 hours this time.
The fact that this was confirmed so swiftly signals that production is ramping up and is probably further along than many may have calculated. Making Ritter’s casting official also gives them the option of introducing the character in their Daredevil series, which is still shooting in New York. The options are very open ended.
It also should be noted that despite the character officially hanging up the tights in her storyline, this will be Marvel’s first super-powered female hero. (Unless you count Skye from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3.) The Marvel/Netflix partnership will be the continued push to diversify the heroic cinematic world of Marvel. We are getting Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, before Captain Marvel and Black Panther show get their respective solo movies in a few years. Which will allow for a more diverse identification with the audience and probably more profit for the studio. Regardless, progress is being made in the world of superheroes and that is always a good thing.
Here is the official press release from Marvel.com.
Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that Krysten Ritter will star in “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015 following “Marvel’s Daredevil.”
Ritter will play Jessica Jones, first introduced in writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos’ classic ALIAS comic series. After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.
“Krysten brings both the hard edge and the vulnerability the role demands,” said Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. “We can’t wait for fans to see her in action, coming to Netflix in 2015.”
“Krysten Ritter has the type of range, spanning the comic to the tragic, that makes for the stuff of the best Marvel heroes,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “As Jessica Jones, Krysten will bring one of the most beloved new characters of the past decade to life in a way we know will delight her longtime fans and introduce her to many more.”
Best known for her roles in “Breaking Bad,” “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23,” and “Veronica Mars,” she will next star alongside Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, and Jason Schwartzman in Director Tim Burton’s “Big Eyes” this Holiday season.
“Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.
It seems that Ritter might have the unique set of qualities that Marvel seeks in their actors. In Breaking Bad, she showed the ability to be both quirky and tragic, sometimes within the same scene. So it would be interesting to know how closely they are looking to adapt her very mature origin story. It also should be noted that we will be able to view this series in less than a year. While there wasn’t a specific release date given (nor for Daredevil which will premiere first), they must be gearing up to shoot within the coming months. So get ready to hear a lot more about this and the other Marvel/Netflix projects.
