For a television series that was actually shot on the streets of New York, Marvel managed to keep the story and action of their upcoming show, Daredevil, under tight wraps. That hasn’t stopped the show from gaining a swell of awareness, built on the back of their audience’s trust in the Marvel logo. We are a little more than a month away from the release of the show, at which point Netflix will release all thirteen hour-long episodes of the first season.
Marvel recently released publicity stills, which feature Matt Murdock and his cast of supporting characters who have been pulled from the pages of the comics. Fans are doubly excited because this will be the first time that we see the grittier side of the Marvel universe. Many have wondered where Daredevil falls in relation to the continuity of the larger MCU. Marvel television’s Emma Fleischer recently gave a brief explanation of the timeline.
“We are still part of the Marvel Universe,” she explained,”but we are not explicitly in that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. world. We’re in our own corner. So the aliens came down and ruined the city, and this is the story of Hell’s Kitchen’s rebuild.“
That is an interesting approach and signals that we won’t be seeing many overtly super-powered beings initially. Also setting it in that time period allows for more flexibility in story telling. Daredevil exists in a time where fantastical things have happened. However, aside from Daredevil himself, the characters we are following on the show are relatively grounded and realistic. At this point Daredevil is just learning and certainly doesn’t have the kind of status that would allow him to run with the Avengers. Actor Charlie Cox, aka Matt Murdock, explains that “in this show, Daredevil feels special, like a big thing, not an everyday occurence. It’s not like he’s one of that lot…”
Well, not yet at least…
