Entourage

Stars:  Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Dillon, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara, Debi Mazar, Haley Joel Osment, Billy Bob Thornton, Emmanuelle Chriqui

Official Synopsis:

“Entourage” is the much-anticipated big-screen version of the award-winning hit HBO series. Movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), together with his boys, Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and Johnny (Kevin Dillon), are back…and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Some of their ambitions have changed, but the bond between them remains strong as they navigate the capricious and often cutthroat world of Hollywood.

There was once a big demand for a movie version of Entourage. There is a huge fan base for the HBO series, but it is still yet to be determined if the time has passed for the show. Regardless, it seems that they are putting their best foot forward by cramming as many celebrity cameos as possible to widen their market. I never got into the show, so it is hard to see this as anything less than ridiculous. However, I would be dense to not recognize its significance to many who tuned in to watch it weekly on HBO back in the day. Then again this wouldn’t be the first time I have been called dense…

Spy

Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Jude Law, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson

Official Synopsis:

Susan Cooper (McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster. Written and directed by Paul Feig, the comedy also stars Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Miranda Hart.

Melissa McCarthy is enjoying a significant level of popularity.  However just like most stars with a meteoric rise, her comedic sensibilities have started to outwear their welcome with audiences growing increasingly familiar with her routine. Spy isn’t a dramatic turn from anything she has done in the past, but this time around she is supported by an appealing cast featuring Jason Statham, Jude Law, and Rose Byrne. If you told me just those three were starring in a movie, I probably would check it out. So I won’t let McCarthy deter me. Second big reason to see this movie is because it was director Paul Feig’s action-comedy warm-up before shooting the remake of Ghostbusters, also starring McCarthy. With that being said…Spy looks like I’ve already seen it before. But hey, that’s why you go to the movies!

Insidious Chapter 3

insidious-poster-pointofgeeks

Stars: Dermot Mulroney, Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson

Official Synopsis:

The newest chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

There aren’t a wide selection of horror movie options, so this may be the best option for those in search of some thrills. The third installment of the Insidious series is crafted by the creator of the original, which is a positive sign for the movie. But it’s hard to not view this as another factory-made horror sequel coming down the assembly line.

Jurassic World

Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, BD Wong, Judy Greer, Ty Simpkins, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy

Official Synopsis:

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly.

Jurassic World is on track to be a major blockbuster. This will be the next firm step into the Chris Pratt era. After killing it in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, audiences are eager to see more from the comedic action star. On the other side, there are many that are nervous that this is the film that will finally jump the shark for the dinosaur franchise. This will be a hit regardless, because not many will be able to resist a trip back to the park.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Stars: Nick Offerman, Olivia Cooke, Jon Bernthal, Connie Britton, Molly Shannon, Thomas Mann

Official Synopsis:

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” is the uniquely funny, moving story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life. He even describes his constant companion Earl (RJ Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a ‘co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Olivia Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer – he slowly discovers how worthwhile the true bonds of friendship can be.

This movie was the buzz of the festival circuit and is one of the best dramatic movie options of the month. Honestly, the movie seems like kind of a drag, but maybe it has the opportunity to be something special. The movie spoofs and the overall celebration of film is what has me interested, being a huge film geek. This is your best pick for one of your boring friends who only likes “real” movies, if you need to make a compromise while waiting in line.

Inside Out

Official Synopsis:

From the tepuis of South America to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In 2015, he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all – inside the mind of an 11-year-old named Riley.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Pixar’s newest movie has people buzzing. The concept seems to have captured the imagination of adults and it is a given that the animation will charm children as well. This looks like a return to form for the studio, who have fallen into a rut by many people’s evaluation. The concept of different emotions controlling our actions is one that should resonate and has the potential to add some of the most mature subtext to Pixar’s films, since Up.

Ted 2

ted2-poster-pointofgeeks

Official Synopsis:

Seth MacFarlane returns as writer, director and co-star of “Ted 2,” Universal and Media Rights Capital’s follow-up to the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time. Joined once again by star Mark Wahlberg and fellow “Ted” writers Alec Sulkin & Wellesley Wild, MacFarlane produces the live action/CG-animated comedy alongside Bluegrass Films’ Scott Stuber, as well as John Jacobs and Jason Clark.

The first Ted caught a lot of people off guard. The beer-guzzling, foul-mouthed, teddy bear was like a childhood dream come true. Or a really bad Family Guy tangent that goes on for two hours. This is our official stoner pick of the month for you. So make sure to prepare for this movie accordingly…But don’t take our word for it, look at the poster for crying out loud!

Batkid Begins

batkid-poster-full

Stars: Batkid, Batman, City of San Francisco

Official Synopsis:

On one day, in one city, the world comes together to grant one 5-year-old cancer patient his wish.

The documentary “Batkid Begins” looks at the “why” of this flash phenomenon. Why did the intense outpouring of spontaneous support for a child reverberate around the world and become one of the biggest “good news stories” ever?

The film explores what happens when an event goes unintentionally viral, and reveals surprising truths about what happens when a nerve is touched in our digital society. Will Make-A-Wish fulfill its mission to help Miles reclaim his childhood after battling disease for more than half his short life?

In the end, the film leaves audiences to decide; did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?

We have been covering this documentary for some time. It is one of the more heartwarming real-life stories to come out of the world of geek. A terminally ill kid’s wish is granted with the participation of over 12,000 people in San Francisco, transforming him into the hero the city deserves, Batkid.
