Media Round Up – October 2015 Movies to Look Out For

It’s October and typically this is the dry season for movie lovers. However this year there are an abundance of options coming to local cinemas. This is actually the beginnning of an avalanche of films that will be coming strong all the way through the spring. There are a bunch of flicks (some already in theaters) that have the perfect combination of brains and spectacle that you are most likely hoping for. So with no further adieu, let’s take a look at the movie going options for October!

October 2

The Martian

Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Bridges, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Pena, Donald Glover, Kristen Wiig

Official Synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, “The Martian” features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

This is your sure-fire bet of the month and well worth the price of admission. It’s early, but this is clearly one of the best options for the month. Trust me…

The Walk

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ben Kingsley, Charlotte Le Bon, James Badge Dale

Official Synopsis:

Twelve people have walked on the moon, but only one man has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), and aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, Petit and his gang overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan.

This looks like the perfect blend of spectacle and brainy filmmaking that could only be fully appreciated in the fall season. It looks like Robert Zemeckis is bringing his A-game and who doesn’t like a good heist film that takes place thousands of feet in the sky…in IMAX 3D? Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in this true story about a man who illegally attempted to tight rope across the World Trade Center in the 1970’s. This is the other film on the October list that you should designate for your IMAX budget.

Pan

Stars: Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller, Garret Hedlund, Rooney Mara

Official Synopsis:

Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the film follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny-to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

It’s hard to get behind this retelling of the Peter Pan story. Not because I’m some kind of Neverland purist, but because it looks like crap. But ya never know until you see it… There certainly is a lot of talent involved, but this somehow doesn’t feel right. We will find out in a couple of weeks.

Goosebumps

Stars: Jack Black

Official Synopsis:

In the Goosebumps movie, upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong in the new Goosebumps movie.

Ugg… Not that I was expecting much from this…but ugg. There is a huge fanbase of people who grew up reading the children’s horror books, Goosebumps. This looks like it should be premiering on the Disney channel, not in theaters… Sorry Jack…you aren’t enough to convince me to get excited for this one.

Beasts of No Nation

Stars: Idris Elba

Official Synopsis:

“Beasts of No Nation” is based on the highly acclaimed novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, bringing to life the gripping tale of Agu, a child soldier torn from his family to fight in the civil war of an African country. Newcomer Abraham Attah gives a stunning portrayal of Agu, while Elba dominates the screen in the role of Commandant, a warlord who takes in Agu and instructs him in the ways of war.

After seeing the first season of True Detective, it is clear that Cary Fukunaga is a filmmaker that we should be tracking over the coming years. This is also the latest chapter in Netflix’s aggressive takeover of the entertainment industry. Idris Elba is continuing to expand on his resume, before taking off into the stars as the villain of Star Trek Beyond. Hey, its worth putting on the queue.

Bridges of Spies

Stars: Tom Hanks, Mark Ryland, Alan Alda

Official Synopsis:

A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.

Honestly this doesn’t look the like the most original movie on the slate. A period piece, espionage film from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks has been seen before. However, those two have rarely failed in their decades of making films, so expect the exceptional. Honestly, this will not be on the top of the list for the month, but I’m ready to be surprised.

Crimson Peak

Stars: Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam

Official Synopsis
:

Legendary Pictures’ “Crimson Peak,” a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy” series, “Pacific Rim”), written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.

So the early word on this film is that it’s more of a romance than the trailers would suggest. Aside from that possible revelation, this may be my least anticipated Guillermo del Toro movies in years. It simply looks dry and boring. Hopefully it’s a case of bad marketing and we will be surprised.

October 23

Jem and the Holograms

Stars: Juliette Lewis, Aubrey Peoples, Molly Ringwald

Official Synopsis:

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ “Jem and the Holograms,” four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

This is far from an endorsment to see this. We simply just wanted to remind you that it does exist. Unfortunately…

The Last Witch Hunter

the-last-witch-hunter-poster-pointofgeeks

Stars: Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Michael Caine

Official Synopsis:

The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

Oh no. No, no, no… There are surprisingly a lot of people that are optimistic about this movie. I would like two glasses of whatever they are drinking, because Vin Diesel simply doesn’t seem to fit into the setting. Add in his dry and overly serious delivery and this actually might be worth seeing…for the unintentional comedy.

Steve Jobs

stevejobs-poster-pointofgeeks

Official Synopsis:

Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, “Steve Jobs” takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.

“Steve Jobs” is directed by Academy Award® winner Danny Boyle and written by Academy Award® winner Aaron Sorkin, working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. Michael Fassbender plays Steve Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple, with Academy Award®-winning actress Kate Winslet starring as Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley. The film also stars Katherine Waterston as Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ ex-girlfriend, and Michael Stuhlbarg as Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original members of the Apple Macintosh development team.

Everyone has grown tired of the biopic formula, but after the refreshing Straight Outta Compton showed how a biographical film can tie together moments in history, it will be interesting to see what Aaron Sorkin has cooked up. Add to the mix one of the best actor and directors in the world, with Michael Fassbender and Danny Boyle, and this might be something special.

Rock the Kasbah

Stars: Bill Murray, Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Bruce Willis

Official Synopsis:

A has-been rock manager from Van Nuys, California stumbles upon a once-in-a-lifetime voice in a remote Afghan cave in “Rock the Kasbah,” a dramatic comedy inspired by stranger-than-fiction, real-life events and directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson. Richie Lanz (Bill Murray), dumped and stranded in war-torn Kabul by his last remaining client (Zooey Deschanel), discovers Salima Khan (Leem Lubany), a Pashtun teenager with a beautiful voice and the courageous dream of becoming the first woman to compete on national television in Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol.” Richie partners with a savvy hooker (Kate Hudson), a pair of hard-partying war profiteers (Danny McBride and Scott Caan) and a hair-trigger mercenary (Bruce Willis) and, braving dangerous cultural prejudices, manages his new protégée into becoming the “Afghan Star.”

Bill Murray. That is all…

October 30

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

scouts-guide-zombie-apocalypse-poster-pointofgeeks

Stars: Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Patrick Schwarzenegger

Official Synopsis:

Three scouts and lifelong friends join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes. When their peaceful town is ravaged by a zombie invasion, they’ll fight for the badge of a lifetime and put their scouting skills to the test to save mankind from the undead.

Yes. Hell yes. This looks like the movie that delivers on what it advertises. A bloody, over the top comedic take on the zombie genre. We also get another look at the future Cyclops, Tye Sheridan, before his superhero debut X-Men: Apocalypse. This has all the ingredients to be a cult film, much like Zombieland a few years ago.
