Media Roundup – The Other MAY 2015 Movies to Watch

We wanted to try something different this time around for our Monthly Media Roundup. Since Avengers: Age of Ultron opened on May 1st, we assumed that the world already knew to look out for that one. (Cracks knuckles) Now it’s time to get into all of the other May movies coming our way. It is finally the season of the movie, so let’s get ready to go for a ride. Here are some of the film releases to look out for this month.

May 8th

Playing It Cool (limited release)

PlayingitCool-poster-pointofgeeks

Stars: Chris Evans, Michelle Monaghan, Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Aubrey Plaza, Ioan Gruffudd

Official Synopsis:

“Playing It Cool” is the story of ME (Chris Evans), a young man disillusioned by love, who meets a breathtaking young woman, HER (Michelle Monaghan), at a charity dinner by pretending to be a philanthropist. Only one problem: she’s engaged. Yet, he engages into a platonic relationship to be able to keep seeing her. Like a young ‘Walter Mitty’ using the power of imagination and wild vignettes, ME will stop at nothing to conquer HER heart.

Okay, so they want to play dirty with this one? It is rare that you will EVER find a romantic comedy getting much coverage at the Point of Geeks. However, by casting Captain America and Falcon as best friends…well, that is just playing unfair! The cast also features Ioan Gruffudd, which means that there is also a Fantastic Four reunion between the original Human Torch and Mr. Fantastic. This sounds like the ultimate date night compromise!

Hot Pursuit

Stars: Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara

Official Synopsis:

An uptight and by-the-book cop (Reese Witherspoon) tries to protect the sexy and outgoing widow (Sofia Vergara) of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.

This odd couple actually looks pretty funny and it is hard to turn down watching Sofia Vergara in anything. If they didn’t give away all of the best moments in the trailer, it looks like this can be a pleasant surprise.

Skin Trade

Stars: Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Michael Jai White, Ron Perlman, Peter Weller

Official Synopsis:

New Jersey detective, Nick Cassidy (Dolph Lundgren) heads to Bangkok where he teams up with Thai detective, Tony Vitayakui (Tony Jaa) to hunt down Viktor Dragovic (Ron Perlman) and destroy his human trafficking network. Nick had inadvertently killed Dragovic’s son in a sting operation on the New Jersey docks, and Dragovic responded by attempting to kill Nick and his family. Nick miraculously survived the brutal attack, but his wife and daughter were killed. With nothing but vengeance to live for, Nick and Tony traverse their way through the Bangkok underworld in search of the elusive Dragovic. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Eddie Reed (Michael Jai White) is sent in to bring Nick home. But as the crossfire ensues, Nick has to determine who his true allies are.

What is not to like about this? This is pure B-movie gold and it’s hard to fathom how you can possibly mess this one up. Real-life martial arts legend Tony Jaa (Furious 7) and Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) join The Expendables’ Dolph Lundgren on a bloody crusade to kill Sons of Anarchy’s Ron Perlman! You had me at “Jaa.” They even threw in the original Robocop, Peter Weller! An action movie of this magnitude should not go unheralded.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad-max-pointofgeeks-poster

Stars: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Official Synopsis:

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

This is in my top three most anticipated films of the year. The Road Warrior is simply one of the best action movies ever made and George Miller coming back to the franchise he created is incredible. Hardy has already proven to be one of the most dynamic actors around and hooray for R-rated action. If this movie doesn’t look good to you, then you are invisible to me. Let’s roll!

Pitch Perfect 2

Stars:  Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Katey Sagal, Hailee Steinfeld, Hana Mae Lee

Official Synopsis:

The Barden Bellas are back in “Pitch Perfect 2,” the follow-up to summer 2012’s smash hit. The comedy will be helmed by Elizabeth Banks, co-star and producer of “Pitch Perfect,” and produced by Paul Brooks, Max Handelman and Banks. Writer Kay Cannon returns to the team to pen the next chapter.

This is not my cup of tea, but the upcoming sequel is getting a heavy push and should be good counter-programming. It looks like everyone involved is having a great time. So enjoy!

Slow West (limited release)

Stars: Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Mendelsohn

Official Synopsis:

Set in late 19th Century Colorado and centering on a young man’s epic search for the love of his life. The exceptional cast includes Michael Fassbender as Silas Selleck, a mysterious and inscrutable stranger acting as the paid protector to sixteen-year-old Scottish aristocrat Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is on a reckless journey through the American Wild West. Ben Mendelsohn crosses their paths as Payne, the leader of an intimidating posse of outlaws on their journey to find Rose Ross (newcomer Caren Pistorius) the humble farmer’s daughter who fled from Jay’s life.

It’s hard to imagine Michael Fassbender ever making a bad film and he is surrounded by a very talented cast in Slow West. Kodi Smit-McPhee has made a reputation as one of the best young actors around as well. If you want to get a preview of the next Nightcrawler in the X-Men universe, this is a good bet. It seems like the movie has a blend of humor, drama, and old west sensibilities. Definitely going to check this one out.

Poltergeist

Stars: Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Rosemarie DeWitt

Official Synopsis:

Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man,” “Evil Dead,” “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

Sam Raimi has been on a roll with his horror movie reboots in recent years. It’s a daunting task to take on the 1980’s horror classic, Poltergeist, but from the looks of the trailer it seems they have made a complex film. It looks like the horror movie pick of the month.

Tomorrowland

tomorrowland-poster-new-pointofgeeks
Stars: George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, Tim McGraw

Official Synopsis:

From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure “Tomorrowland,” starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world–and them–forever.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Disney’s top secret, Tomorrowland. It’s rare that we get any unexpected adventures at the theaters nowadays, so it will be fun to see what director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) has come up with. The latest trailer showed off the tone and some of the creative action sequences that we can expect. Check it out.

San Andreas

San-andreas-poster-pointofgeeks

Stars: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, Kylie Minogue, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd

Official Synopsis:

After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning, and when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.

As a California resident, this one might hit too close to home. However, I’ve sat through other natural disaster flicks like Twister or Into the Storm, so I will give this one a shot. Despite my eyes already glazing over anticipating The Rock’s superhero routine in the movie.
