Wonder Woman will be a familiar face on the big-screen after her debut in Dawn of Justice and then in her scheduled solo film in 2017. After decades of anticipation…years of development…and months of speculation…a director has been chosen by the movie gods (better known as studio executives), to mold the Wonder Woman film out of clay. According to The Hollywood Reporter, television veteran Michelle MacLaren has signed on to direct and develop the film.
MacLaren may be from a TV background, but her work is what has blurred the lines between the small and big screens. She has directed some of the most iconic episodes of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, including “To’hajiilee,” “Gliding Over All,” and “The Bear and the Maiden Fair.” MacLaren is skilled at handling nuanced character moments as well as epic, period action.
The hiring of a female director has been a topic of debate and contention since the announcement of the solo film. Wonder Woman is the most well-known female superhero icon in existence. Her popularity is due her epic backstory, themes of self-empowerment, and her history as a feminist icon, are among some of the reasons that she has endured for over 70 years in pop culture. It has been inexcusable that it has taken this long to get this character to the big-screen and consequently, the production will have even more scrutiny than the average movie.
MacLaren will be directing Gal Gadot, who will first portray Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in what is rumored to be an adventure set in the 1920’s. MacLaren will help to develop the script along with screenwriters who have not yet been identified. The film will be produced by Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder, Charles Roven, and Deborah Snyder for Warner Bros. It is safe to assume that the general story has already been outlined and that the solo film will serve to fill in viewers in on Diana Prince’s backstory. It should also tie into the larger story being told in the Justice League trilogy (if you count Dawn of Justice). We can’t wait to bring you more news about the story and casting of the upcoming film. Stay tuned!
