Marvel’s new venture with Netflix seems to be moving along smoothly. Yesterday Marvel’s Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight tweeted that the show had wrapped filming and the show is moving to post-production. Daredevil will be the first show out of the gates for the joint venture. There have been strong rumors that series will premiere in May, 2015.
The next series in the pipeline is A.K.A. Jessica Jones. We brought you the news weeks ago that Marvel Studios had found the actors that they wanted for the roles of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Since that time Krysten Ritter has been confirmed as the title character of her show, however there wasn’t a confirmation of Cage. Well the confirmation came today from Marvel Studios. Mike Colter (Halo: Nightfall, The Good Wife) has secured the role of Luke Cage, also known as Power Man. This is what Marvel had to say via their press release:
Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that Mike Colter will star as Luke Cage in “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015 following “Marvel’s Daredevil.”
During the course of an investigation in New York City, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage – a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica in ways she could never have imagined…
“Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage,” said Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. “We’re excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”
“Fans have longed to see Luke Cage and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,’ and experience why he is such an important super hero in the Marvel mythos.”
Cage will get his introduction in A.K.A. Jessica Jones and it seems as if he will be getting more than a cameo, before he spins off into his own series. Jones and Cage go on to have one of the more prominent relationships in modern Marvel comics. They eventually get married and have a child together. Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg is known for being the writer of the Twilight series. Hopefully she will have a more mature take on these Marvel heroes, as Jones in particular, has one of the more harsh backstories in Marvel Comics.
This series is ramping up to shoot at towards the beginning of the year. It is still unclear who will be the showrunner on Luke Cage’s solo series, but it does seem like that series should be the next in line. In any case, it seems that they have found a competent actor for the part. It should be a fun time starting next spring, as a new chapter in Marvel Studios begins with their Netflix partnership.
