This year had two movies with fights that were billed as the match-ups of the century. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War featured battles between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel, as well as Steve Rogers versus Tony Stark. Which are two events that are hard to top. However, there is an even larger heavyweight fight around the corner.
In 2014, Legendary Pictures reinvigorated the giant monster genre with their reboot of Godzilla. The movie was a staggering success at the box-office, scoring a $93 million dollar opening weekend which rolled out the carpet for the return of another classic beast. Next year King Kong returns in Kong: Skull Island, with a star-studded cast featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, and Samuel L. Jackson.
This morning a new poster surfaced for the upcoming movie that should be of particular interest to fight fans. It features a topographic map of Skull Island, the home of Kong, and a header that reads, “Bring the Truth to Light.”
The excellent folks over at ComingSoon cleverly unlocked the mystery of the poster by shining a black light over it. What it revealed were images and notes by William Randa, played by Goodman in the movie, that seem to indicate the presence of Godzilla. One of the most legible notes, almost reads as a riddle to viewers.
His mouth is fire; his roar the floodwater; his breath is death. Enlil made him guardian of the Cedar Forest, To frighten off the mortal who would venture there. BUT WHO WOULD VENTURE THERE?
Clearly, this is indicating that Godzilla exists in this universe. It should be noted that Kong: Skull Island takes place in the 1970’s and 2014’s Godzilla took place in the present, so a timeline is being constructed.
Additionally, in the top left corner of the poster is the Monarch logo, the company that tracked monsters in Godzilla, which is the smoking gun that there is a connection between the franchises being bridged. So, it seems that there will be a lot of clues in Skull Island, which will carefully lay the groundwork for an eventual meeting between the cinematic titans.
It’s always possible that this is alluding to another monster waiting for King Kong in the film. However, Legendary has not been shy in the past about their desires to bring back the classic cinematic matchup to the big-screen in the near future. Fortunately, Kong: Skull Island is less than five months away and the mystery will soon be revealed.
