There is a little more than two months to go until the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron and despite having two trailers, much of the movie has not been revealed.
Marvel released the newest poster for their upcoming film and honestly it is largely underwhelming and shockingly uninspired. While promotional and marketing materials hold no bearings on the quality of a movie, some event films deserve a memorable poster. If the movie is a success, it can even mark a point in cinematic history. Think of the posters for Star Wars, Jaws, and The Dark Knight, they reflected what makes the movies stand out and helped to define an era. The newest poster really doesn’t indicate director Joss Whedon’s vision or tone for the second Avengers’ adventure. It is curious that Marvel, with its history of epic comic book covers, couldn’t come up with something more creative and memorable.
However, the most interesting part of the poster is in the details. The cast list for Age of Ultron has been updated and it seems that a certain flying superhero will get his wish granted. Anthony Mackie had been publicly campaigning for a cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron for months. He has already been confirmed for next year’s Captain America: Civil War and has shared his enthusiasm for a new Falcon suit. However, we could be seeing his upgrade come as soon as two months from now. One of the best new friendships in the Marvel cinematic universe was established in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, between Falcon and Cap. It should be fun to see him “on his left,” once again.
As we reported months ago Idris Elba would be showing up in the movie, along with Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell. Surprisingly Don Cheadle, who plays James Rhodes aka War Machine, is actually credited higher than Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision, despite those three Avengers being mentioned as integral to the story in the Age of Ultron synopsis (read below). In a clip from the movie, Rhodes is hanging out and seemingly a part of the gang. However, despite being ranked so high on the credits he hasn’t been referred to publicly as a new Avenger, which is surprising because Cheadle is a draw of his own. It should be assumed that he will be suiting up as War Machine in the movie since he is wearing his gauntlet in a clip, however the length of his involvement is unknown. There hasn’t been any mention of Cheadle in Civil War, but it would seem like he is a natural fit alongside Stark, provided he makes it out of the Age of Ultron alive.
The bottom line is that Marvel is taking the right approach by giving fans enough to wet their appetites, without spoiling their own movies. It is rumored that there hasn’t been a scene from the third act revealed, so audience’s can expect a few surprises come May. However if you want to know more…we will be here every step of the way bringing you the latest scoops.
