After over 75 years of in popular culture, Wonder Woman will finally be making the leap from the pages of DC Comics to the big screen. The project has been in various stages of developmental hell for decades with numerous notable filmmakers such as Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), both coming within weeks of putting the legendary Amazonian on the screen. However, there were always roadblocks keeping the icon from coming to the big screen.
Things will change when director Zack Snyder introduces Diana Prince into his newly developing DC extended universe, whose foundation can be found in Man of Steel, but will be realized in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gal Gadot scored the role of a lifetime and has been cast as Prince in the movie before she headlines as the character in the Wonder Woman solo film. The movie just began principal photography with director Patty Jenkins (Monster) at the helm and a freshly announced international cast that suggests a world-spanning adventure.
The supporting cast was confirmed with some surprise additions and exclusions. It has been rumored for months that Chris Pine (Star Trek) will play Steve Trevor, the long-time love interest and government liaison for Wonder Woman. We already got our first look at his character from the movie thanks to actor Saïd Taghmaoui posting the two in full costume online last week, which caused a stir. Also joining the fun are veteran actors, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, and David Thewlis. However, despite rumors that Nicole Kidman is in negotiations for a major role, she was not included in the announcement. It’s likely that Jenkins is using the formula that proved successful for Superman: The Movie and Batman Begins, by surrounding their unknown lead talent with veteran actors. In the past, this has created a more believable and fully functional world and it certainly seems that is the aim for Wonder Woman.
It’s also worth noting that there doesn’t seem to to be any mention of villains. A force as mighty as Wonder Woman has to have adversaries that could match her power level. So it’s logical that another major announcement should be following soon. Keaton had Nicholson, Bale had Ledger, and Reeve had Hackman, so it would makes sense that Warner Bros is working on a reveal for a high profile actor as the villain.
Our first look at Gadot in the promotional image for Wonder Woman gives us a glimpse of what is to come. The hooded cloak presumably covers her iconic costume, suggesting that Prince may be using stealth measures, a la Assassin’s Creed, to get to her destination at some point in the movie. In the first look, we also see her trademark tiara and gauntlets as well. Hopefully, we will get an origin and explanation for the functionality of her costume, within the narrative of her first solo adventure. In the background, there is what looks to be ancient architecture that could signal that part of the adventure will take place in a exotic locale, such as Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s homeland. This is just the beginning of Wonder Woman news as filming continues and we will be bringing you the latest…so get ready.
