It’s been a while since we have had a back-from-hell movie. This sub-genre has been quiet as of late, mostly due to zombies ruling movie and TV screens. The Lazarus Effect is on its way next month and it looks like it will be delivering chills that we haven’t seen for a while on-screen.
The movie is about a group of med school students who are conducting research on bringing animals back from the dead. When an accident happens to one of the researchers, they decide to conduct their experiment on the newly deceased student. She comes back to life, but seemingly brings a bit of hell back with her. The movie looks like a cross between Pet Sematary, Event Horizon, and Flatliners, all films dealing with reanimating or bringing things back from a hellish afterlife. The Lazarus Effect seems to be a classic cautionary tale about tampering with life via science and it looks pretty chilling.
The real draw of the movie is the cast. It stars Olivia Wilde (Rush) as the researcher who returns from the dead with a hidden evil. Evan Peters (American Horror Story) also features in the movie and is riding a wave of goodwill from his appearance as Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Television and rap star Donald Glover (Community), also known as Childish Gambino, stars in the film as the token black guy who apparently doesn’t even make it past the trailer. (Seriously, that has to be some kind of record.) Hopefully it is just marketing misdirection and he will make it through the movie providing his trademark humor…but we will see. If you are a horror fan, this looks like one to keep your eyes out for. Enjoy the terror…
