Cameras will be rolling in the spring and there are numerous roles to be cast in the upcoming sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse. The field general of the team Scott Summers and the telekinetic Jean Grey are just two of the roles that are casting as you are reading this. However no role is more important than the one that the movie is named after, Apocalypse.
The word is that Oscar Isaac (Drive), fresh off his work in Star Wars: The Force Awakens has secured the titular villain role of Apocalypse. Fans of Marvel Comics know that this is a villain and a threat that has not yet been visualized in the cinematic world of the X-Men. Apocalypse, born En Sabah Nur, was born in Eygpt centuries ago. He is reknowned as the first mutant in X-Men mythology. Over the years he implemented cybernetic enhancements with alien technology, which in conjunction with his immense mutant powers, made him god-like in both ancient Egypt and the modern day.
Fans were given a glimpse of the young En Sabah Nur in the tag scene of Days of Future Past. Exactly how director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg intend to depict one of the most legendary foes of mutantkind on screen has yet to be unveiled. However Singer has given indications on what type of action to expect from the film:
‘Apocalypse’ will have more of the mass destruction that ‘X-Men’ films, to date, have not relied upon. There’s definitely now a character and a story that allow room for that kind of spectacle.
Isaac has been gaining an increasing amount of attention since his star-turning role in Inside Llewyn Davis. He has a large role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, despite the specifics not being disclosed yet. You may also recognize him as one of the leading candidates for the role of Doctor Strange at Marvel. Clearly he is mesmerizing casting directors with his talent and it should be interesting to see what he brings to the role.
He doesn’t seem to have the features or physicality associated with the character, however his casting is the clearest signal yet that Apocalypse will be brought to life by a motion-capture performance. We do know that James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender will all be returning and will figure heavily into the plot. Both Singer and Kinberg have been overly enthusiastic about the project, so they must have a dynamic story up their sleeves. We can’t wait to bring you more as the story unfolds.
