Patty Jenkins to Replace Michelle MacLaren as WONDER WOMAN Director

Warner Bros wasted no time and have decidedly kept their Wonder Woman film on course after the news hit a few days ago that director Michelle MacLaren and the studio had parted ways. According to THR, they have decided on Patty Jenkins (Monster) as the replacement. There is a lot riding on the film for a multitude of reasons. It is set to be the largest scale female-led superhero movie ever. The character has over 75 years of history and mythology, which has led to her becoming an iconic symbol of feminism and the ultimate superhero.

When looking at their resumes it would be easy to assume that MacLaren wasn’t as prepared for the job, since she has made her name on network television, as opposed to feature films. Which could actually be a strength in this case. Since she made her name taking on shows, like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, with predetermined rules and mythologies, while still managing to elevate the material. Jenkins, on the other hand, has directed an Academy Award winning film in Monster before moving heavily into the TV world. It is still uneseen if her indie sensibilities can mesh with tentpole filmmaking. She is most recently known for being hired as the director of Thor: The Dark World for Marvel Studios, before losing the seat at the last minute and being replaced by Alan Taylor (Terminator: Genisys). So things have come full circle in some ways.

There have been various reports on the direction WB and producer Zack Snyder have in mind for Wonder Woman’s first solo adventure. It has been rumored to have been set in the 1920’s, set against a backdrop of an earlier era. Recently Latino Review has also rumored that there was previously up to six suits designed to be used in the upcoming film. The change of director means that the set pieces, locations, and the larger DC Universe plot points which connect it to the Justice League, will likely stay the same. However, hopefully Jenkins will get the opportunity to inject her own voice into the project. The only confirmed cast member is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, while Scott Eastwood is rumored to be attached as Steve Trevor, depending on the time period that the movie is set in. Aside from supporting characters who may pop up from the other movies, such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it looks as if Jenkins has jumped on at a point when she can still mold the cast.

There is still a lot of things up in the air and they will quickly fall into place. We will bring the latest on Wonder Woman as the project develops.
