While the superhero craze has dominated the box-office in recent years, it’s easy to forget who the real king of ticket sales for Disney has been. While Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War were billion dollar successes, they aren’t the only series capable of reaching such heights. Next month’s release of Doctor Strange only needs to gross half that amount to be considered a hit to give some perspective. However, the real guaranteed money for Disney has always been in their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
In four movies, the Pirates franchise has grossed over $3.7 billion dollars, so you certainly don’t have to pull out your calculator to find out why a fifth installment is on the way. While the franchise has been trending downward, particularly with the last installment which made $300 million dollars less than any other Pirates film. However, the series has been an undeniably costly, yet profitable investment for the Mouse House in the past.
The teaser trailer is suspiciously absent of the franchise’s star in Captain Jack Sparrow. Javier Bardem’s ghostly Captain Salazar dominates the early look as Disney focuses on the chills, over the thrills and humor found in the Pirates movies. However, that’s certainly not a coincidence as actor Johnny Depp has had a rash of unsavory press recently due to his turbulent personal life. In addition, while he is the star of the show, the character of Jack Sparrow has also not aged well, as Depp’s performance turned into more of a caricature than a fully realized character.
The teaser highlights the visual effects and seafaring adventure that you would expect from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. However, it has yet to be seen if there are any new, compelling reasons to come back to the series for a fifth time. Check it out.
